USMC : Happy 233rd Birthday , Fellow Marines !!

 

Today, November 10,2008, we celebrate the 233rd anniversary of the founding of the US Marine Corps .

It's also the anniversary of the date I met my late wife - Ruth - at a Marine Corps Birthday Ball. I asked her to dance, and forgot to stop asking. We were married just over 50 years,when she received Orders for which there was no appeal.

This page is also dedicated to a fellow Marine : Dayton X. (Dusty) Cordier -with whom I had the distinct honor of working for a few years. Dusty was one of the Marines who fought their way up Mount Suribachi-and who saw the American flag raised - both times- on that bloody slope.

The first flag raising was to tell those below the slope had been taken. The second-as most folks know now-was done for morale purposes, with a highly trained photographer in attendance.

Dusty said it didn't matter. It made his hair stand on end to see that flag go up - both times !

Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful) : a motto that has been lived in real life for 233 years !
