I ran across this moving post in The Moderate Voice, and, in honor of Memorial Day, decided to post a link to it - rather than waste your time with my own half-formed thoughts.

On November 10th, 1775, the United States Marine Corps was formed.
It is a date celebrated by Marines - active and otherwise -every year.
It is also the date I met my wife Ruth - who was one of the "Red Cross Girls" who joined us "jarheads" in celebrating the event.
I saw her sitting across the room; asked this sweet, shy woman to dance, and did my best to monopolize her that evening ...and thereafter.
We had been married just over 50 years when she was "called elsewhere" .

Happy Birthday, fellow Marines !
A sad footnote: As Marines everywhere celebrate the 234th birthday of the Corps, the Nation will be holding a different Memorial at Ft. Hood Texas, for those slain by an Army major "gone rogue".
There is always an empty chair at our observance : reserved for our fallen comrades. What a shame for it to be emptied that way !

It is sad to lose a comrade in battle : tragic when unarmed young soldiers are brutally murdered by someone who believes his God has given approval to his cowardly deed!
And yet, we go on - as we must : acknowledging the empty chair at our table , and continuing : Semper Fidelis - Always Faithful.
