My Daughter-in-law decided to arect a bird feeder in the back yard : something she had long wanted to try.
For the first week , the feeder was zealously guarded , first-bird-takes-all territory.( The caption is a joke, of course---but just barely !)
Then something odd happened: the birds (most of whom are House Finches) seem to have discovered when they fight over the feeder and try to swarm it...
... Some of the seeds they are fighting over drop to the ground , where any bird - including some too big to use the feeder-can reach them.
(Last shot is a bit fuzzy: had to shoot through screen door as birds were a bit shy.)
The birds seem to have developed a "cooperative framework" out of their natural instinct to compete to the death !!
Not bad for " Bird Brains" ----and a pretty good example for us : the smart species !!
